We have to admit it: when we were first invited to experience a safari by motorhome, our initial reaction was probably the same as yours when reading the title of this article.
"A motorhome... in Tanzania?"
For most people, a safari is synonymous with open-top 4x4 vehicles, luxury lodges nestled in the savannah, and constant transfers from one accommodation to another. The idea of exploring one of Africa's most fascinating countries in a true home on wheels initially seemed almost counterintuitive.
Our Experience in Tanzania
After seven days travelling across red dirt tracks and endless savannas dotted with giants baobab - home to elephants, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, lions, hippos, and other wildlife species - and after admiring some of the most breathtaking landscapes we have ever seen, we came to one clear conclusion:
This is not just a camper that has simply been brought to Africa.
Instead, it means bringing the camper travel philosophy brought to places where, until yesterday, it seemed impossible.
The distinction seems subtle, but it changes everything.
The Camper Cell Safari Concept
Camper Cell Safari did not take a conventional European motorhome and attempt to adapt it to Tanzania. It is an intelligent solution that allows even a complex expedition to be undertaken with complete peace of mind.
The Walking Safari
Among the many experiences we had, the walking safari is the one that we will remember most of all.
Stepping out of the vehicle and continuing on foot alongside professional park rangers completely transforms the way you observe wildlife.
The giraffes appear even taller and more curious. The zebras become visibly alert and cautious. Buffaloes reveal just how watchful they really are. Warthogs seem constantly busy, yet always aware of their surroundings. Even the sound of the wind takes on a different meaning when you know you are truly sharing the animals' natural environment.
Experiencing these encounters without the protective filter of a vehicle window is a privilege that surprisingly few travellers choose.
It is difficult to describe.
It simply has to be experienced.
Beyond the Safari
Equally unforgettable was our meeting with the
Hadzabe, one of Tanzania's last remaining hunter-gatherer communities.
They live without electricity, running water or modern means of transport. Their language is characterised by distinctive click sounds that seem to come from another era, and their way of life tells a story completely removed from our own—without any need for theatrical presentations or staged performances.
They are extraordinarily skilled archers, something they demonstrated during a hunting expedition to which we were invited as observers.
Logistics and Costs
There is another aspect of this kind of journey worth considering.
Before travelling, we assumed that a motorhome safari would inevitably be more expensive than a traditional lodge-based safari.
In reality, by eliminating many transfers, frequent accommodation changes and much of the logistical complexity normally associated with this type of trip, the overall budget is often used far more efficiently.
You are not simply paying for a more comfortable place to sleep.
You are investing more of your travel budget in the experiences themselves.
And that is where the real difference lies.
