Since 1981, Ducato has helped millions of people and businesses across Europe move, work and grow, becoming one of the most trusted names in the light commercial vehicle market.
Ducato turns 45 as one of the most successful and recognizable vehicles in the European light commercial vehicle market. This milestone celebrates a model that has supported generations of professionals, entrepreneurs, artisans and families on the move, consistently translating customer needs into practical, reliable and forward-looking mobility solutions. With more than 3.5 million units produced since its launch, Ducato has become an icon of purposeful mobility: robust, intelligent and designed around the real demands of everyday work. For decades, it has consistently ranked among Europe’s best-selling large vans, strengthening its position as a reference point for professionals across multiple industries. Within the FIAT Professional range, Ducato is the flagship model: a strategic pillar and a benchmark for customers seeking reliability, efficiency and versatility. Its role is part of a broader leadership story, with FIAT continuing to stand out in Europe both in urban mobility and in light commercial vehicles.

Over four and a half decades, Ducato has continued to evolve alongside customers’ businesses, supporting a wide spectrum of missions, from city deliveries to long-distance transport, from small enterprises to large international fleets. Across six generations and continuous technological evolution, Ducato has anticipated and addressed changing customer expectations, and mobility trends while remaining true to its original mission. From more efficient engines to advanced connectivity, driver assistance systems and the fully electric E-Ducato, the 100% electric version offering up to 424 km of WLTP range, fast charging from 0 to 80% in 55 minutes, it has progressively enhanced performance, comfort, safety and sustainability, confirming its ability to remain relevant in a rapidly evolving market. Ducato has also been a true trendsetter and reference point in its segment. Its front wheel drive architecture, rational design and car-like driving position introduced innovative solutions that helped define a new standard for large vans, anticipating trends that many competitors would later follow and confirming its role as a benchmark in vehicle design, usability and everyday efficiency.
Proudly produced in Italy at the Atessa plant, one of Europe’s largest van manufacturing sites, and in Gliwice, Poland, able to serve and support a flexible industrial footprint. For decades, Ducato has been the preferred base for motorhomes across Europe, becoming the backbone of camper culture and a symbol of freedom on the road. Conceived from the very beginning to facilitate conversions, Ducato’s bond with the world of motorhomes was born almost immediately: as early as 1982, with its commercialization in Germany, the first chassis were supplied to renowned camper manufacturers such as Dethleffs, Heku and Weinsberg, opening the way to one of the most enduring success stories in European leisure mobility. In 1983, the introduction of the low-frame chassis confirmed Fiat’s early attention to the needs of camper converters, while the 36 Ducato-based campers exhibited at the Essen Caravan Salon that same year marked the beginning of a remarkable presence in the sector.
From then on, milestone followed milestone: the record delivery of 14,705 chassis to camper manufacturers in 1991, the 100,000th Ducato base vehicle handed over to Dethleffs in 1996, and the 200,000th delivered to German camper manufacturers in 2003. With the Camping Car Chassis Special and, above all, the X250 generation launched in 2006, Ducato fully embraced its vocation as a motorhome icon, becoming the first model designed with dedicated camper specifications under the evocative “Born to be a Motorhome” philosophy. Today, around 1.6 million Ducato camper bases have been produced, confirming their long-standing leadership that has been recognized year after year by customers, specialist manufacturers and leading industry awards. In 2025, Fiat Professional Ducato was named “Most Popular Motorhome Base Vehicle” for the 17th consecutive year in the prestigious Promobil readers’ poll, while in Germany FIAT Professional recorded 31.370 recreational vehicle registrations in 2025, up 17% versus the previous year, further underlining the strength of Ducato in one of Europe’s most important camper markets. Beyond its success in the motorhome sector, Ducato’s enduring strength lies in a development philosophy that has guided it from the very beginning: Fit for Mission. More than just a van, Ducato was conceived as a flexible, intelligent platform, designed to adapt to the real needs of every customer, every profession and every business.
That vocation is reflected in one of the broadest ranges in the segment, supported by direct factory-built solutions from panel vans to chassis cab, platform, dropside, tipper and cargo box. Today, this customer-centric approach continues through the CustomFit program, which gives customers access to an even wider range of certified, high-quality conversion and personalization solutions, developed in close collaboration with a trusted network of partners. It is this unique capacity to listen, evolve and adapt — to every job, every journey and every ambition — that has supported millions of professionals across Europe and continues to make Ducato the vehicle of choice for virtually every mission.
