All the solutions for the best night’s sleep in your motorhome

Travel will be the focus, but so will stops and stays, at the next Salone del Camper, the trade fair returning to Parma from 13 to 21 September 2025 for its 16th edition.
The traditional event, organised by Fiere di Parma in collaboration with APC, the Caravan and Motorhome Manufacturers Association, shines a spotlight on the entire sector, with stands, talks and events already taking shape in the coming months.

While the journey and the vehicle itself are important for getting from one part of the world to another, a restorative night’s sleep is just as essential, often rounding off a day of adventure or sporting activity spent outdoors, in touch with nature. A motorhome’s sleeping area can be configured in many different ways, depending on the vehicle and varying according to space requirements, comfort and the number of people on board.

There is the central double bed, accessible from both sides; the transverse rear bed above the rear garage, with steps for access; twin beds, separated by a central corridor, often with wardrobes underneath; the drop-down bed that lowers from the ceiling or a wall, saving space in the living area; the over-cab bed, positioned above the driving cab; and the French-style bed, a longitudinal double bed set against a side wall. For those needing extra sleeping places, the space-saving solution is bunk beds, or so-called “convertible beds” created by transforming the living area, obtained by lowering the table and joining the cushions together. Finally, there is the pop-up bellows bed, which opens from the roof and is usually found in vans or compact motorhomes.

"As well as a wide choice of bed types,” explains the Salone’s brand manager Gloria Oppici – “modern motorhomes also offer a very high level of night-time comfort: most fixed beds have wooden slats beneath the mattress, ensuring excellent ventilation and perfect body support during rest. Mattresses come in various types, very often with a substantial thickness (15 cm), with differentiated density according to body zones, and made of bio-latex. The mattresses are also fitted with removable, zip-up mattress covers that are anti-mite, antibacterial and easily machine washable. Night-time comfort is further ensured by windows fitted with mosquito nets and internal sliding blackout blinds, allowing you to sleep partially or completely in the dark. Ventilation is guaranteed – besides the windows – by the presence of roof skylights too. Modern motorhomes are all equipped with dedicated reading lights for each bed, often dimmable as well. Some motorhomes are even fitted with sensors that automatically light up the floor when you get up during the night, allowing you to reach the toilet or kitchen without waking the rest of the crew. Night-time comfort in a motorhome is therefore now comparable to that found at home.” The watchword: soft fabrics, easy to wash, hypoallergenic too!
To enjoy a peaceful night, as well as a good bed, you need pleasant, useful and comfortable accessories and fabrics. Examples include a mattress topper, sheets, a duvet or sleeping bag, and quality pillows and pillowcases made from hypoallergenic materials. For practicality, some motorhome enthusiasts prefer the so-called “sleeping bag” solution, while others recreate a home-like bed, complete with duvet and sheets.

Whatever the choice, night-time bedding needs to be practical, compact and easy to manage within the available space. Breathable, skin-friendly organic cotton is recommended, as is microfibre, which is lightweight and dries quickly, or technical fabrics for those who like travelling to areas with cold or humid climates. Space-saving solutions that fit easily into wardrobes, side pockets and storage compartments integrated into the sleeping area include the sleeping bag liner – essentially a sleeping bag made of cotton – and compressed sets of sheets and duvets that roll up into compact bags.
