The beach was crowded, but that's okay; it was the week of August. The sea was gorgeous. I believe there's a bus to Otranto that stops outside the rest area, but we didn't use it because we had a rental car to get around. The shade was so-so, but we were on the beach all day, so it was fine. We don't have air conditioning, but we always slept well, obviously with everything open. Third point, the beach is accessible via a passage in the pine forest directly from the rest area and it takes about 10 minutes on foot; there is also a small bar where you can have a coffee and chat with other campers.
